Childhood friends PAUL SIMON and ART GARFUNKEL, who had begun making records as Tom & Jerry in 1957, first hit the charts in 1966 with their No. 1 hit, "Sounds of Silence", which had been released on their 1964 album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., as a folk song. Considered one of the best folk-rock groups of the era, the duo won 1968 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Pop Vocal ("Mrs. Robinson") and 1970 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Album of the Year ("Bridge Over Troubled Water"). Simon, who wrote the title song, also received a Grammy for Song of the Year. After embarking on a solo career, Simon won a 1987 Grammy for Record of the Year for "Graceland". The duo reunited in 1975 for the Top 10 single, "My Little Town", and in 1981 for a concert in New York's Central Park that attracted half a million fans. The success of that concert led to their 1982-1983 world tour (Europe and Japan in 1982 and the U.S. and Canada in 1983). Simon & Garfunkel next appeared together at their 1990 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and played 21 sold-out concerts in New York before opening the Grammy Awards ceremony in 2003. That year, they teamed up with the Everly Brothes for their 2003-2004 "Old Friends" tour. Minor scratch at upper edge of bridge.
